This Red-shouldered Hawk overcame incredible odds to a make a full recovery after a vehicle strike. The hawk had head trauma, spinal trauma, and internal bleeding from the strike. While many injuries and conditions are treatable, spinal trauma is often beyond repair. However, despite the severity of its injuries, the hawk began to make progress with intensive supportive care and medication. Once the hawk was standing and self-feeding, we knew it had a chance to return to life in the wild. When it was ready, we moved it into an outdoor cage for flight exercise to prepare it for release. While every patient’s release is a cause for celebration, this extreme case was a particularly exciting occasion!
