Bufflehead

buffleheadThe colder months can present more challenging cases, and in turn can produce some of the most amazing recoveries. This Bufflehead had a grave prognosis. The drake had suffered several puncture wounds from an animal attack and was rapidly losing weight as well as his waterproofing. The duck was initially taken to another wildlife rehabilitator, who treated the wounds and then transferred the bird to Tri-State. With so many challenges, the odds were not on the Bufflehead’s side. But with intense supportive care, medication, a professional wash to help re-establish waterproofing, and species–appropriate housing, the duck rebounded. He was soon self-feeding, gaining weight, and waterproof! Once ready, the tiny diving duck was banded and returned to a suitable habitat by Tri-State volunteers.
