This Turkey Vulture was brought to our friends at City Wildlife in Washington, DC for care after a vehicle strike. However, this was not an ordinary vehicle strike—the vulture had been hit by train somewhere between Chicago and DC and was discovered lodged in the front of the train when it stopped in DC. Surprisingly, the vulture survived the incident without any major fractures or internal injuries. When the vulture was transferred to us to prepare for release, x-rays we took showed the bird had previously suffered pelvic fractures. Despite the old damage to its pelvis and being hit by a train, the scavenger demonstrated it was still a perfectly functioning bird and was soon flying strong in the large outdoor flight cage. This very lucky vulture was released on site and quickly took to the skies.
